What Is a Heinz Bet? Heinz Betting Explained

Heinz betThis is not an article about beans or even beanz, nor is it a fascinating biography of former Man United and Argentina left-back Gabriel Heinze. No, this is the latest in our series of features covering all the different full cover bets. We have already looked at Trixies, Yankees and Super Yankees/Canadians and now it is the next multiples betting option: the Heinz.

Because these bets are almost identical in many ways, there is a lot of crossover in our explanations. As such, we will keep certain points relatively brief in this piece and instead refer you back to previous articles for more detailed analysis.

What Is a Heinz?

If you have read our feature on a Super Yankee (which is also often called a Canadian) then you will know that it is a bet which requires five selections. A Heinz is the natural progression from that and includes six separate selections. As with the other full cover bets we have looked at, the Heinz combines all possible combinations of these selections to cover every acca from a double upwards. The table below shows the 57 separate bets that make up a Heinz, the name of course coming from the 57 varieties slogan of the famous American food company.

What Bets Does a Heinz Include?

Bet Types Unrelated Selections
Doubles 15
Trebles 20
Fourfolds 15
Fivefolds 6
Sixfolds 1
Total Bets 57

As we can see, as with all full cover bets, the smallest acca possible is the starting point and a Heinz includes all the 15 doubles that are possible from six selections. Let us imagine that you pick a horse to win each of the six races at a meeting and we have numbered each horse from 1-6 indicating the race it is relevant to. The 15 doubles are:

  • Horse 1 combined with – Horse 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 (five doubles)
  • Horse 2 combined with – Horse 3, 4, 5 and 6 (four doubles)
  • Horse 3 combined with – Horse 4, 5 and 6 (three doubles)
  • Horse 4 combined with – Horse 5 and 6 (2 doubles)
  • Horse 5 in a double with – Horse 6 (one double)

Obviously at the other end of the scale there is just a single sixfold acca and this includes all six selections. In order to win this bet all six of your predictions have to be correct and, obviously, if this is the case you will win the other 56 bets as well for a 100%, 57 out of 57 strike rate. You’ll also be looking at a fairly decent net win too!

In between the doubles and the sixfold accumulator you have all possible trebles, fourfolds and fivefolds. To garner any return from the Heinz you must, as with all full cover bets, land at least two winners. There are “full cover with singles” bets that also include the singles too, in this instance adding a further six bets to the overall wager. We look at such bets elsewhere on the site.

Returns from a Heinz Bet

Returns from a HeinzReturning to our Heinz, whilst two winners will lead to a return, it will almost certainly mean a loss overall. The 57 varieties, sorry, bets, that comprise this multiple all require their own individual stake, such that a 10p Heinz will cost £5.70 in total and a punter wanting to bet £20 on a Heinz will have just 35p on each double, treble and so on.

If you have just two winners then the only one of the 57 bets that wins is the double correlating to those legs. A net win is possible from such a bet but the two winners would have to be at lengthy odds to compensate for the 56 losing bets. If all six legs are priced at evens, getting just two right will mean a loss of £18.55 based on a 35p Heinz (costing £19.95 in total). If both were priced at 7/1, reasonably typical odds for a horse racing Heinz, the overall net win would be £2.45. Not a lot but a net win is a net win.

Take a look at the table below to see some example returns based on various odds and numbers of winners. Note that for simplicity we are assuming that all winners are at the same price but in reality returns will depend on the specific odds of each of your inning selections which will normally vary.

In the table below, that bottom figure of almost £350k certainly seems pretty incredible with a base stake of just 35p. It is worth noting, however, that had you placed a single sixfold acca for the total stake value of £19.95, the net win would be boosted to an incredible £10.6m (subject to maximum payout restrictions). Does anyone know where we can find six 8/1 winners?

Odds of Winners Number of Winners Net Win (from 35p Heinz)
Evens 4 £5.25
Evens 6 £230.65
3/1 3 £19.25
3/1 5 £1,066.45
8/1 3 £320.25
8/1 6 £349,960.80

More Detailed Info

Below you can see some other important information that relates to this particular bet but that we have already covered in much more detail elsewhere.

  • Related Contingencies – Related bets cannot be combined in any multiple or acca, so, for example, you could not create a Heinz that included Man United to beat Liverpool as one selection and Man United to beat Liverpool 5-4 as another. Check out our doubles article for the most thorough explanation of this issue.
  • How to Place a Heinz – Learn how to place these bets by reading our pieces on Trixies, Yankees or Super Yankees.
  • Each Way – Read more about backing multiples each way in our feature on doubles as well. An each way Heinz would require 114 stakes in total.
  • What Sports Can I Use? – You can use any sports, market or odds in these bets as long as they are not related in terms of their probabilities. See our feature on Trixie betting for more info.

Bet Inspiration: Punter Lands Nearly £850k on Heinz!

Winner

You might have thought our example of winning well over a quarter of a million pounds from a total stake of less than £20 on a Heinz was far-fetched. Well, if you want a bit of inspiration for your next Heinz or just want proof that such huge wins are possible, check out the story of the punter that scooped almost £850,000 from a £30 Heinz.

This true-life win is similar to our hypothetical Heinz as, in April 2018, an unnamed and now incredibly wealthy punter scooped £847,999 by correctly calling all six winners at a single meeting. The £30 stake refers to each of the 57 bets so, admittedly, the total cost of £1,710 was a significant outlay, beyond the reach of most recreational punters. Even so, turning £1,710 into not far shy of a million remains a hugely impressive feat.

The gambler nailed the first six races at Sandown and took Coral for their biggest ever fixed-odds loss at horse racing. The six horses to do the business were:

  1. Ballymoy at 15/2
  2. Top Notch at 5/4
  3. Altior at 2/9
  4. Step Back at 8/1
  5. Call Me Lord at 7/4
  6. Silverhow at 9/1

The acca itself, the sixfold, accounted for a massive £173,559 of the payout and had the punter actually put all of the total £1,710 stake solely on the sixfold he would have won, in theory, an insane £9.9m! But the beauty of the Heinz is that had one horse, Altior, let him down, even with five winners the successful backer could have landed £379k!
